Back Position Description
General Information
Assignment Code AV0417VU50
Duration 18 months
Proposed Start Date August 2017
Assignment Location Port Vila, Vanuatu
Assignment Summary
The Vanuatu Ministry of Health is responsible for protecting and promoting the health of the people in Vanuatu. They need your help to assist in strengthening the capacity of their core surveillance and response capacity at all levels, in order to meet the challenges posed by public health events of national or international concerns. This includes early detection and response.

Vanuatu has one of the lowest ratios of health workers per head of population in the Pacific, exacerbated by significant inequalities in distribution of workforce; it is likely that only 30% of the health workforce is targeted at community health. Access to these services is further hampered by transport costs and geography. At the national government level, a lack of basic health services has been identified as a “major cause of hardship and poverty in the country”.

Your role as a Health Quarantine Officer will include reviewing legal and policy framework to improve the Vanuatu health system. You will also provide support thorough consultations with a wide range of stakeholders. Additionally, you will assist the Public Health Directorate in coordinating surveillance response within the Ministry, as well as across other relevant sectors.

Your time with the Vanuatu Ministry of Health will contribute to disease prevention, protection and control in the communities and to keep Vanuatu safe from major health outbreaks.
