Assignment Summary
Are you passionate about creating a productive, profitable, healthy and sustainable land-use system? Come work with The Pacific Islands Rainforest Foundation (PIRF) to improve their practices in Agroforestry and increase the livelihoods of Fijian’s.

PIRF Nawai forestry demonstration farm is situated near Nadi, the farm has a focus on strengthening the commercial forestry sector. There is a need for technical support and assistance in Agroforestry management, protection and commercial plant nursery knowledge and practices. PIRF have focused on the implementation of the Reforest Fiji Project, which is in partnership with the European Union (EU) and SPC which commenced in June of 2015. The project is designed to improve watershed management in the sugar cane belt on Viti Levu. The project also provides ground assistance to the local community through the implementation of re-forestation initiatives, addressing the on-going soil degradation of the sloping foothills along the Drasa, Koronubu, and Malolo belts in the Western Division. It is expected that this project will result in a show case of 6,010 hectares of tree plantations of various models, compromising of a mix of vesi, teak, sandalwood, mahogany, eucalyptus pine and citrus mixed with Agroforestry display site incorporating the best of Agroforestry and Permaculture. 

As the Agroforestry Trainer you will ensure strategies are in place to increase staff’s knowledge and understanding of reforestation, livestock roles, silvopasture, rparian and upland forest buffers. You will also strengthen community, student and women’s awareness in Agroforesty to reduce poverty and improve food security. The volunteer will be required to travel to Nawai where the farm is situated and to Suva for farm related meetings and planning.

This assignment will further develop the demonstration farm increasing the knowledge of staff and farmers on practical tools of Nursery and Agroforestry applications. It will also increase the income and improve the livelihoods of the communities.
