“IGNITE THE SPIRIT WITHIN” and support the VAN2017 Mini Games as the Broadcast & Technical Coordinator (TV and Radio). The 2017 Pacific Games promises to be a defining event in Vanuatu’s history, as the nation seeks to overcome the devastation of Cyclone Pam and produce an event that will capture the imagination and interest of not just our people, but of the entire Pacific and beyond.
The Pacific Games is the Oceania region’s premier multi-sport event. It can be compared to the Olympic Games albeit on a much smaller scale. Fiji hosted the first Pacific Games in 1963 and the Games are held every 4 years in a different Pacific country. The 2015 Games were held in Port Moresby, PNG and the 2019 Games are scheduled for Tonga. The Pacific Mini Games was introduced in 1981 to allow the smaller nations to bid and host a “mini” version. The number of sports and athletes are less but the services provided to all are the same – Athletes Accommodations, Transport, Food, Medical, Volunteers, etc.
Vanuatu will proudly host the 10th Pacific Mini Games from December 4th to 15th 2017. This is the 2nd time Vanuatu has hosted the Games – the first was in 1993. The opening ceremony is on December 4th showcasing local culture and entertainment and on closing ceremony day is on December 15th 2017.
The Van2017 Pacific Mini Games is the largest multi-sport event ever held in Port Vila, Vanuatu. We will welcome over 2,000 elite athletes, coaches, VIP officials, referees and umpires, medical practitioners, media personnel and broadcasters for this celebration of sporting excellence, Pacific spirit and national unity. For just the first time in the history of the Pacific Mini Games, our cousins from Australia and New Zealand will participate in Men’s Rugby 7’s and mixed Weightlifting, thereby raising the standards and prestige of the Pacific Mini Games to new heights. It will be a unique opportunity for our nation to showcase its capabilities – which is why the Vanuatu Government is making a significant investment to ensure the Vanuatu 2017 Pacific Games will be a major success. The theme of the 2017 Pacific Games is IGNITE THE SPIRIT WITHIN which provides a powerful message of mobilising communities, athletes, citizens and businesses to use these Games as a powerful catalyst for positive change and activation of the country and its place in the Pacific.
